As I showed you in Richard Florida's Heatmap, there is a strong potential to leverage the triangle formed by Lex, Lou and Cin. But this is not something that will happen if people are passive. It will only occur if there is strong political cooperation on both sides of the river and a coherent, consistent marketing effort by everyone involved. We all have the same goals - so why not brand the region as an economic triangle? I have talked to people in NYC who have no clue that Cinci is only 1:15 away... it might as well be 6 hours in their mind.

Developing an Appalachian regional ecosystem can lead to local community economic development that "highlights" local assets. This entrepreneurship and innovation exploration program could advance the arguments and seven strategies developed by University of Kentucky scholar Ron Hustedde in his article entitled" What's culture got to do with it? Strategies for strengthening an entrepreneurial culture. The article can be found in Entrepreneurship and Local Economic Development, by Norman Walzer.

I am sorry I have been so busy until now... campaigning forums and door to door, collecting and distributing luggage for my foster/adoptive kids project, meetings for my 12 year old and attention for my other half. I will gladly listen to and share thoughts with anyone. -don pratt

DON PRATT - Candidate for Lexington’s Council at Large
“Questioning what’s wrong and advocating what’s RIGHT!”

Why support Don Pratt for Lexington, KY’s Council at Large

The Don Pratt conundrum

Campaign’s public supporters!
http://donbpratt.com/?page_id=3
If you’d like to be added to the list: dbp91044@gmail.com

While I am the candidate, why we should change is found in my advocacy:
(Barefoot & Progressive’s estimate of one of my opponents spending is $78,000. Despite the means, I will spend around $950.)
WE SHOULD NOT”BUY” ELECTED OFFICE!
WE MUST CHANGE OUR CAMPAIGN METHODS with PUBLICLY FINANCE ELECTIONS. Not money directly to the candidates but WITH:
1) VOTER GUIDES to ALL the voters (something like Oregon's) with equal info and references to more information, maybe more than one voter guide, to all voters before elections.
2) publicly financed web pages for candidates to answer important questions from the general public, even from organizations and groups that currently send questions but limited attention.
3) publicly financed web pages providing biographies and endorsements.
4) Instant Runoff Voting (ask for a leaflet on this method and it's benefits.
5) voting by mail to increase public participation.
6) cut off (absolute) of donations to candidates two weeks before the election date, if any money is used, and immediate public listing on the net.
7) printed material of the above (where applicable) to read at public places(libraries, schools, etc.) for those that are not internet active.
8) televised forums/debates of candidates on public access channels and commercial TV for regional campaigns.
Let's be leaders in the state, nation and internationally to prove democracy is participatory and NOT bought by corporations or the rich.
DON PRATT - Candidate for Lexington’s Council at Large - http://donbpratt.com/
“Questioning what’s wrong and advocating what’s RIGHT!”

I AM THE…
- Only candidate calling for a public elected auditor to open the books and encourage open, financial observation of government.
- Only candidate calling for reform of elections to stop the INCREDIBLE waste on campaigning, such as the millions in the mayor’s race.
- Only candidate calling for progressive ordinances such as a bottle/fast food containers bill to reduce trash and waste, and local medical marijuana for those that need the resource.
-don pratt

MY RESPONSE TO THE HERALD’S ENDORSEMENTS OF OTHER CANDIDATES:
For more business as usual, vote for any of four candidates: they are interchangeable. If you want change, vote for me and Gorton.
While Lexington is broke, other candidates talk about pet projects, ways to spend more money that Lexington doesn’t have. I advocate ideas that might actually bring in tax revenue, such as legalization of medical marijuana and allowing farmers to grow hemp. Others are silent.
The Herald-Leader’s failure to endorse me again, despite agreeing with my positions, has become the object of speculation: the local weekly North of Center called it The Don Pratt Conundrum, http://noclexington.com/?p=1875 The answer to the conundrum is simple: The Herald-Leader endorses people who play its game, who for show join neighborhood associations, attend committee meetings, and bow down to the institutional liberalism that has dominated our local government for three decades. I will make changes, unlike those who sat idly by while Kentucky-American unfairly raised our water rates.
I don’t conform. I live frugally. I fill my living room with luggage for foster/adoptive kids.
The Herald-Leader will never endorse this non-conformity, which amounts to political independence, an attribute lacking in the other candidates. The Herald-Leader has abdicated its role in covering local politics; therefore, you’ll have to read my bio at http://donbpratt.com/ and my positions at http://kentuckyelection.org/lexington/ The blog Barefoot and Progressive has also written about me: http://barefootandprogressive.blogspot.com/search/label/Don%20Pratt
Sadly, The Herald hasn’t reported on, nor condemned, the vast unreasonable sums of money being spent on this and the mayoral race.
          Elect Don Pratt!

Ms. Plomin raises valid points here. Engaging one another - hopefully citizen-to-citizen as much as possible instead of through contrived public mechanisms - is key to raising the tide for everybody.

As Maryjean Wall's recent book reports, Kentucky wasn't built as the horse capital of the world. That's a fine title and even more importantly a vital industry for we Kentuckians nowadays, make no mistake. BUT our state has so many other things to offer - let's figure out how to capitalize on them for both our mutual benefit and secondarily for the benefit of the rest of the country and world.

Fiduciary responsibility, coupled with a desire to garner votes in the next election, contribute heavily to the caution demonstrated by public leadership. That's why Brown's emphasis on investment is so crucial - private capital and private-public partnerships introduce risk-reward. All too often, neither is available to stakeholders in strictly-public development paradigms.

It's great that LFUCG has charged a dedicated committee to economic development - big big first step. Now we have to motivate the people of this city to engage the committee vigorously - otherwise it's nothing more than another bureacracy.

Eric,

Thanks for taking time to engage the candidates, especially Kathy. I am glad to be supporting Kathy Plomin for council-at-large because of her experience and her knowledge of Lexington. The council needs someone that has a good understanding of the community and one who has proven to engage and listen to others for their input.
